Well we are officially over the half-way point of summer and I am feeling it all fly by. Why does summer have to go by so quick? I can’t believe we are almost halfway through August already. I remember as a kid time used to go by so slowly and I felt like school would never start up again but now I am clinging to whatever strand of summer that is left. This past weekend I hit up the Edmonton Folk Music Festival. It was such an awesome time every year. We always get a weekend pass so we can spend the whole time enjoying all the music. I was lucky and didn’t have to do much for work last week and so we really got to just enjoy it all. Also we live so close now to where it all happens that it was almost too convenient!
For those that don’t know, the festival starts on a Thursday night and runs all the way until Sunday night. It is so well organized that the weekend just feels so easy going and relaxed. There are about 15000 people who attend the festival, it is absolutely insane. The funny thing is, although there are so many people, I always seem to run in to the same friends all weekend!
If you haven’t been before, the festival is made up of 7 stages that host music all weekend. There is a main stage where the big acts perform but on all the smaller stages there are other concerts and workshops. The workshops are probably my favourite part of the festival. The artists join together and jam along with each other’s tunes and it is really amazing.
Some highlights of bands I particularly liked this year if you are in the need for some new music were:
– The East Pointers
– The Mae Trio
– Sarah MacDougall
– Lisa Hannigan
– Sarah Harmer
– River Whyless
– The Staves
– Sam Beam and Jesca Hoop
– The Head and the Heart
This is just a handful of artists I saw! There was honestly so many amazing acts that it was hard to choose what to go see. Anyway here are some photos! If you have a chance to go next year, I highly recommend it!
