Ways To Reduce Waste

September 16, 2016

Over the past few months I have been noticing how much waste we humans produce and how many unnecessary things we tend to buy. I am definitely no saint when it comes to reducing waste, but I thought it would be a good idea to be more conscious about what waste we are producing at home and how we can eliminate some of it. I’ve compiled a list of things I am going to try to eliminate and reduce at home so if you are looking for some ways to help reduce waste then you can try out some of these things!

  1. Bring bags to the grocery store. This seems like a given, but I forget a lot of times if I am just running out for something quick.
  2. Use a reusable water bottle. Don’t buy plastic bottles but instead use a glass or stainless steel bottle.
  3. Make a meal plan for the week and only buy what you need! Many times we can get carried away in the grocery store and end up with more food than we can eat.
  4. To eliminate some package waste, buy more in bulk and try to avoid individually wrapped items.
  5. Pack your leftovers into labeled containers so you can avoid buying other food when you have something ready to go.
  6. If you can, make a compost! You can use this later for your garden.
  7. Instead of using paper towel to pick up spills, use a good cloth that you can wash and reuse.
  8. Donate items that you aren’t using anymore instead of throwing them out.
  9. Recycle paper and cardboard instead of throwing it in the garbage.
  10. Turn off water when brushing your teeth!
  11. Roll up the toothpaste as you go to make sure you use it all.
  12. Add water to the bottom of your shampoo or conditioner to make sure you get the last bit at the end.
  13. Wash your clothes with cold water, rather than hot! This will save electricity.
  14. Buy LED bulbs over incandescent.
  15. Turn down your thermostat when you aren’t at home and when you are sleeping.
  16. Try to bike, walk, or use public transit as much as possible.
  17. Turn off lights in rooms you aren’t using, and try to use natural light as much as possible.
  18. Hang your laundry to dry, rather than using the dryer.
  19. Take shorter showers!
  20. Try to make as much food from scratch as possible to avoid the waste from packaging.

Hopefully some of these tips can help and encourage you to eliminate a bit of waste from your home and to save money! If you have any tips let me know, as everything helps even just a bit!
